Cyproheptadine and Twinkies: A winning combination?

For those of you wondering about Colman, he’s been doing great. We had a checkup at TCH not that long ago and everything looked the same heart-wise, which is fantastic news.

I told the team in Houston that I’d taken Colman to a gastroenterologist here in San Antonio to make sure I’d covered all the bases. That was a specialist we hadn’t seen yet, so I thought, Why not? Let’s just see all the specialists.

The gastroenterologist thought it might be good to try a drug called Cyproheptadine. It’s an antihistamine, but it’s sometimes used as an appetite stimulant. Even though it’s safe for heart kids, I didn’t want to add anything until I’d run it by Houston. Dr. Jeewa kind of shrugged and said, “Eh. You’re welcome to try it, but I don’t know if it will actually do anything.”

(I love it when they give me the whole, Knock yourself out, but don’t get your hopes up. It’s like a look and words and body language all rolled into one.)

(I might just tell them next time about how I like to use essential oils just to see if I can completely short them the fuck out.)

Anyway, we started the Cypro–Whatever, it’s too long to type–in mid June. I don’t know whether it was that in particular or Colman just decided to have the summer growth spurt I’ve been wishing he’d have for the last four summers or the fact that Kevin’s business partner turned Colman onto Twinkies, but he gained a whopping five pounds this summer and grew an entire inch.

I realize that’s not much compared to some kids, but that’s huge for us. And I really feel like I should get at least a high-five from the cardiomyopathy doctor when we go back to Houston.

I so deserve a high-five. As does Colman!

He looks so healthy. And it’s the first time since he was about seven that I can’t see every single one of his ribs from the back. It’s absolutely amazing what a little bit of extra weight can do.

I’m looking forward to making more progress this year! 🙂

  1. So happy to hear this great news about Colman. We often think of him and hope he is doing good. He is so handsome and always flashing that great smile.

  2. So very nice to hear about Colman’s weight gain. High fives to you both 🙂  Life is too short to be unhappy. Everyday is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.
