Off the hook

I took Colman to the gastroenterologist yesterday. Everything looks really good, which I already knew going into the appointment, but it doesn’t hurt to hear it from someone with a medical degree. Colman grew a whole inch in two months! The scale at the clinic had Colman gaining only two pounds rather than the five our home scale showed. Because of the one inch of growth, Colman’s BMI stayed exactly the same, but I told him, “A gain is a gain.” Colman was bummed since we thought, according to our scale, he’d gained five whole pounds, but that’s great news for me.

(I always felt like that wicked bitch of a scale weighed me a tad heavy.)

So the consensus is we like Cyproheptadine.

As the doctor was walking out, he told me, “Keep using the Cyproheptadine for about three more weeks, give him a five-day break, then restart with the half a tablet in the morning and half a tablet at night.”

“Um, half a tablet?” I asked, kinda panicky, feeling a huge wave of mommy guilt at making such a stupid mistake.

I guess the panic must’ve shown on my face because he asked, “How much are you giving him?”

“I thought it was a whole tablet morning and night.”

Crap, crap, crap, crap!

He glanced at his file, shrugged his shoulders and said, “A whole tablet is fine.”

Phewf.

I’m not sure I’ve ever made a medication error, even when Colman was on a grand total of 13 medications. But I can see how easy it would be to do.

I was going to go home and read the label on the medication, but I decided I don’t even want to know at this point.

It worked. That’s all I need to know right now. I’ll be more careful in the future.

I’m taking myself off the hook.

  1. I’ve had har panic when my dog was on a bouquet of meds. I constantly had to check and recheck and then they asked me that question one day–yikes!! So glad he’s growing!!!

  2. And the doc said it was fine, so don’t give it a second thought!
I have been so happy to see the last two posts, but you deserve to take a break anytime you feel like it!
Always thinking of Coleman, and wishing the best for him, and you two too!
